FAQs to Know Your Disease

As the name suggests, vitreous is a transparent, colorless, gel-like structure, which occupies two-thirds of the total volume of eye, and is approximately 4ml in volume. Vitreous is bounded anteriorly by the posterior surface of the lens and the retrozonular part of the posterior chamber.
Macular Degeneration. This is one of the most common eye diseases treated by retina specialists.

Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinal Vein Occlusion, Retinal Tear/Detachments, Posterior Vitreous Detachment, Epiretinal Membrane & Macular Holes, Cystoid Macular Edema, Vitreomacular Adhesion.
Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is an acquired degeneration of the retina that causes significant central visual impairment through a combination of non-neovascular (drusen and retinal pigment epithelium abnormalities), and neovascular derangement (choroidal neovascular membrane formation).

Central serous retinopathy (CSR) or central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) affects the central area of your retina known as the macula. CSR can cause your vision to be blurred and distorted due to fluid collecting underneath your macula. The condition usually occurs in one eye.

Diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. Your body breaks down most of the food you eat into sugar (glucose) and releases it into your bloodstream. When your blood sugar goes up, it signals your pancreas to release insulin.

Eye floaters and flashes are potential signs of retinal detachment or retinal tears. Other risk factors that can be passed down through your family relate to your sight — specifically nearsightedness. If you're nearsighted, you could be at a higher risk of developing floaters.

A macular hole is a small gap that opens at the centre of the retina, in an area called the macula. The retina is the light-sensitive film at the back of the eye. In the centre is the macula – the part responsible for central and fine-detail vision needed for tasks such as reading.

In most cases, symptoms are mild and or get worse slowly. Some people get used to the changes in their vision — but if you notice any changes, it's important to talk to your eye doctor. In rare cases, a macular pucker can cause severe vision loss or lead to a related eye condition called a macular hole.

Rhegmatogenous: The most common cause of retinal detachment happens when there's a small tear in your retina.
Tractional: Scar tissue on the retina can pull it away from the back of the eye.
Exudative: Fluid builds up behind the retina even though there's no retinal tear.

Retinal vein occlusion is one of the most common blinding conditions in the United States; without treatment, central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), the most severe type of retinal vein occlusion often leads to significant and permanent vision loss. High blood pressure and aging are the main risks for CRAO. Glaucoma and diabetes can also raise your risk, as can problems in which your blood is thicker and stickier than normal. In women, the problem has been linked to the use of birth control pills.

The most common causes include proliferative diabetic retinopathy, vitreous detachment with or without retinal breaks, and trauma. Less common causes include vascular occlusive disease, retinal arterial macroaneurysm, hemoglobinopathies, age-related macular degeneration, intraocular tumors, and others. Normally, no treatment is needed for a vitreous hemorrhage. The blood should clear by itself and your vision will be restored. Unfortunately, this may take up to several months. Your eye doctor will follow up with you and monitor this condition until it goes away.
